The UCLA Department of Film, Television and Digital Media seeks to hire a tenured Associate or Full Professor of Animation. The candidate should have a distinguished academic and/or professional record and be prepared to bring fresh perspectives to the art and future of animation in the feature film and television industries as well as experimental or short-format independent work. The UCLA Animation Workshop boasts industry-experienced, award-winning roster faculty, lecturers and alumni who work with students in an “up close and personal” setting with a small number of accepted MFA students in each class, and promotes the philosophy of “one person, one film”. This philosophy allows each filmmaker complete control over their film: its concept, purpose, content, viewpoint, art, form, audience, and value. Additionally, the UCLA Animation program is consistently ranked #1 in the Animation Career Review Top 40 Public Animation Schools and Colleges.

We are looking for a candidate with expertise in all areas of animation including the fundamentals of 2D and 3D animation (e.g. storyboarding, layout, acting, timing, character design), narrative storytelling, and the history and critical theory of animation. The candidate should be able to teach within our required courses a variety of beginning and advanced studio classes with the ability to creatively integrate traditional techniques with emerging technologies and platforms. We seek a dynamic artist/teacher who is committed to training the next generation of animation professionals.

REQUIREMENTS A terminal degree in film, animation, digital arts or a related field, plus a combination of ten (10) years of professional industry experience and/or evidence of individual artistic achievement, and five (5) years of teaching experience is required. Special consideration will be given to applicants who emphasize social responsibility and diversity in their creative work.

RANK/SALARY We are seeking applicants who qualify for an appointment to a Senate Faculty position in the University of California. A reasonable estimated salary range for the position is $133,000 - $281,400, inclusive of the salary scale and off-scale salary components.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS AND DEADLINE To apply, please submit a CV, cover letter, statement of teaching, statement of contributions to equity, diversity, and inclusion, digital portfolio and names & contact information of 3 references.

Please address your materials to the Chair of the Faculty Search Committee, Professor George Huang.

The position will remain open until filled, For full consideration, materials must be received by Oct. 25th 2024. Applications submitted after the initial review date of 10/25/24 will not be considered unless additional review dates are created.

The University of California is committed to creating and maintaining a community dedicated to the advancement, application, and transmission of knowledge and creative endeavors through academic excellence, where all individuals who participate in University programs and activities can work and learn together in a safe and secure environment, free of violence, harassment, bullying and other demeaning behavior, discrimination, exploitation, or intimidation. With this commitment as well as a commitment to addressing all forms of academic misconduct, UCLA conducts targeted employment reference checks for finalists to whom departments or other hiring units would like to extend formal offers of appointment into Academic Senate faculty positions. The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists’ current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University’s Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled “Authorization to Release Information” into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
