Job Description

 

Yale seeks a new Director to conduct and provide artistic and administrative leadership for the Yale Symphony Orchestra (YSO). The Director will present a compelling vision for the YSO at Yale and beyond; supervise YSO staff; teach and advise undergraduate conducting students; foster collaboration with internal and external partners; and with support from Yale Development, lead fundraising and stewardship activities for the YSO. 

Review of applications will begin on October 14, 2024. Start date in mid-August 2025. The search will remain open until the position is filled. 

Reports to: Associate Dean for the Arts, Yale College; Dean, Yale School of Music 

Full-time; 9-month; Renewable three-year appointment; Adjunct faculty status in the Yale School of Music, with a teaching load of at least one course per semester. 

Duties 

  • Conduct and oversee all aspects of the Yale Symphony Orchestra: program YSO season; determine YSO roster; conduct all rehearsals; conduct or co-conduct all YSO concerts; oversee YSO website and newsletter. 

  • Supervise YSO Administrative Associate; 

 
  • Teach at least one course per semester, eg in conducting; 

  • Lead budget planning, oversight, and strategic development of YSO resources; 

  • Lead ongoing assessment of existing programs, with special regard to audience development and alumni/ae networks; 

  • Work closely with Yale Development to present a compelling vision for the YSO in fundraising. Steward existing donor relationships and develop new donor relationships. 

  • Serve as an active member of the School of Music community. 

  • Committee work as required; 

  • Participate in professional organizations when appropriate. 

Job Requirements

Qualifications 

  • Proven success as an orchestral conductor and teacher, with a preference for candidates whose experience includes conducting and teaching at the college level. 

  • Terminal degree in related field of study or equivalent professional experience. 

  • Experience with arts or ensemble management, audience development, and fundraising desirable
