POSITION DETAILS

The Dean of the School of Education (SOE) oversees the undergraduate and graduate programs of the school and three academic departments, Early Childhood & Childhood Education, Middle & High School Education, and Counseling, Leadership, Literacy, and Special Education, comprised of 44 full-time faculty members, approximately 100 adjunct faculty members,14 professional staff and 2 college assistants. The dean also has responsibility for three centers and institutes: The Bronx Institute, The Center for School/College Collaboratives, and The Institute for Literacy Studies, which conduct research and action projects in partnership with schools. The Dean collaborates with other CUNY campuses and with the New York City Public Schools to develop new school-based programs, implement CUNY initiatives, and otherwise promote school counselor, administrator and teacher quality, educational equity, and student achievement.

The Dean reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Student Success and serves as a member of the President’s Advisory Board and a member of the Provost’s and Deans’ Council through which the Dean participates in the formulation, evaluation, and administration of College policy and the advancement of the College’s strategic priorities.

The Dean’s portfolio includes but is not limited to the following major responsibilities:

  • Leads the school by building a vision that encompasses new realities and possibilities in collaboration with faculty, administration and other members of the Lehman community to develop short and long-term strategic and tactical plans that strengthen the School of Education.
  • Oversees the compliance and renewal of national accreditations for the certified programs offered in the College, including the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), Specialized Professional Associations (SPA), and the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
  • Leads and fosters continuous improvement through the culture of assessment, program and curricular review, existing program revision, and new program creation.
  • Ensures that unit and program level quantitative and qualitative data are collected and analyzed regularly and systematically and used to support evidence-based decision-making.
  • Ensures adherence to the expectations of institutional, professional, and programmatic organizations to maximize teaching effectiveness and student learning outcomes.
  • Leads fundraising efforts for the School of Education to diversify and increase resource streams and encourage research grants through public/private partnerships; provides mentorship and guidance to School of Education faculty and staff with grant writing workshops and other faculty development opportunities.
  • Stimulates and supports excellence in teaching, faculty research, publication, and practice, and professional development of all SOE faculty through continuous scholarship engagement and the oversight of appointments, promotion and tenure as well as sponsored research, grants, contracts, and research projects administration.
  • Oversees enrollment, retention and graduation initiatives; licensing and certification; and employment of graduates.
  • Manages the school’s operating budget and both short and long-term financial planning to ensure a strong and sustainable financial future.
  • Pursues and actively promotes mutually beneficial collaborations with stakeholders and constituents, including schools and other educational agencies, local and state governments, and advocates for initiatives that serve the needs of the College and local community.

 

 

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience. Additional qualifications are defined below by the College.

QUALIFICATIONS

An earned Doctorate in one of the disciplines or interdisciplinary areas of study within the School of Education; record as an outstanding leader within a higher education system or national educational organization; record of academic achievement in the discipline meriting appointment as a tenured Associate or Full Professor; University teaching experience complemented by a superior research and scholarly record; proven leadership and administrative experience related to the work of the School; extensive knowledge and experience in a theory/practice area related to urban education; demonstrated knowledge and engagement in research on effective education (including clinical residencies); demonstrated success in obtaining federal, state or private grants; fiscal affairs experience; demonstrated experience and/or knowledge of navigating local, state and national education policies and procedures with a focus on social justice and equity; successful record of building university/school/community partnerships; ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the broader educational community; demonstrated effectiveness working in a multi-cultural environment.

In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the following skills and competencies:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with promoting academic excellence, and the career and social/emotional success of bachelors, masters and doctoral students, alumni, staff, and faculty;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with linguistic, ethnic, and cultural diversity and anti-oppressive, anti-racist practice as safe, equitable foundations for learning, teaching, counseling, and leading in educational settings;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with collaborative inquiry and shared decision-making that support innovative practices in P-20 educational settings;
  • Knowledge of/experience with advancing a vision and strategy for growing programs (including online and continuing education), increasing college degrees and high-quality credentials, and enhancing the student experience using data analytics;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with increasing institutional resources that advance academic, professional, and community-based goals;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with educating, engaging and empowering students; enhancing faculty and staff excellence; strengthening alumni engagement; sustaining growth, improving institutional effectiveness; and embracing the spirit of community engagement;
  • Knowledge of and/or experience with enhancing a school’s profile and stature regionally and nationally.
  • Evidence of collaborative, welcoming, friendly leadership style and record of building meaningful, effective relations with faculty or staff
  • Commitment to educating and fostering an inclusive and diverse community
  • Leadership skills in recruiting, retaining and inspiring talented faculty and staff
  • Commitment to the practices and principles of shared governance

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$145,000-$183,000; salary commensurate with education and experience.
