Organization ProfileCollege of the Atlantic is an interdisciplinary college of approximately 350 undergraduate students and 30 faculty members. Its oceanfront campus is adjacent to Acadia National Park. COA’s faculty are not organized by departments, and all students design their own major in human ecology. The average class size is 13. Faculty teach five courses a year distributed across three ten-week terms; faculty also advise students, direct independent studies and final projects, and contribute to the shared governance of the college. Faculty positions are unranked, and COA does not have a tenure system. Instead, all faculty members are periodically reviewed on a fixed schedule, with positive reviews leading to continued appointments of successively longer durations.
